In this powerful episode of Fanya Mambo Africa with Sarah Mwangi, political commentator and activist Fanya Mambo paints a disturbing picture of Kenya’s electoral future, following his first-hand experience during the recent Mbeere North by-election.
Fanya recounts how he witnessed ballot stuffing, voter intimidation, and police brutality at the polling stations in what he calls a deliberate attempt by the government to suppress democracy. According to him, what happened in Mbeere is not an isolated case — it is a warning sign for the 2027 general election.
“I was in Mbeere and I experienced firsthand a government meting violence upon its own citizens,” says Fanya. “This wasn’t just a flawed election, it was a crime scene.”
He accuses government-aligned forces of deploying goons and rogue police to terrorize voters and opposition supporters. According to Fanya, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has failed in its mandate to uphold a credible election process and is now viewed as a tool of the executive.
“You can’t preach Singapore-level dreams while presiding over thuggery and vote theft,” he says, calling out President Ruto’s administration for hypocrisy in governance.
The Danger of Normalizing Political Violence
Fanya warns that if the current trajectory continues, Kenya is headed toward a dangerous culture where political thuggery and violence replace democratic competition. He draws parallels to gang-ridden Haiti and cautions that Kenya must act now before political goon culture becomes normalized.
He also takes a swipe at the IEBC’s silence during the by-elections, stating that it emboldens those who plan to rig and steal future elections.
“Violence begets violence. If goons determine who wins elections, then Kenya will never see true leadership.”
Kalonzo vs Gachagua: The 2027 Chessboard
The conversation also explores the 2027 political landscape. Fanya analyzes the Kalonzo Musyoka vs. Rigathi Gachagua dynamics and the brewing succession politics in Mount Kenya. He insists that unless Kenya adopts meritocracy over mediocrity, dreams of becoming a “Singapore of Africa” are far-fetched.
“You don’t build a first-world nation with third-rate thinking.”
A Call to Action
Fanya Mambo ends the show with a passionate appeal to the IEBC, police service, civil society, and Kenyan voters:
- Reject goon culture and political violence
- Demand transparency and reform in electoral processes
- Hold leaders accountable, regardless of political party
- And most importantly — vote for integrity, not tribe or handouts
